For maximum performance, Don't enclose an air filter!
No aquarium airbox look and no restriction increase caused by enclosing the filter with a second cover as used in some Camaro systems.
They don't work!
We've tested it repeatedly. If enclosing the filter offered any benefit, we would have built the best closed airbox in the business! IAT's don't change as evidenced by independent testing and restriction climbs rapidly.
By definition, the factory equips the Camaro SS with a ducted, "cold air" air filter housing. This enclosed filter housing also suffers from incredibly high pressure drop, making your engine work harder than necessary to intake engine air. Many current Camaro Cold Air Intakes reduce Air Filter efficiency and engine protection by dramatic amounts!
Keep in mind that the factory air filter efficiency is quite good. Camaro engineers understand how important quality air filtration is with regard to the prevention of unecessary wear and increased longevity. Dirt ingestion caused by poor performing air filters, and the additional impact it has contaminating engine oil, are the biggest contributors of premature engine wear.
How many Camaro owners even consider the implications of increased dirt ingestion and premature engine wear when looking for a cold air intake? How many cold air intake manufacturers stress the importance of filtration when marketing intake systems? Horsepower claims and underhood appearance are nice attributes, but they should never compromise engine protection!
Using 1960's Technology:
Oiled gauze or cheesecloth filter media was developed in the 60's and hasn't changed a bit.
Gauze was never designed to serve as an air filter and it was a poor choice then as it is now.
Air filter efficiency of gauze and poorly designed synthetics can produce many multiples of dirt ingestion when compared to the stock air filter. It's not unusual for gauze air filters to allow over 20 Times the amount dirt through the filter. Competitive synthetics are not much better. Let's consider another factor. These low restriction air filters may work well when new or clean. The restriction curve rises dramatically once they begin to collect dust.
Test a gauze (cheesecloth) or poor synthetic air filter after a few months of normal street wear and you'll find that the restriction levels are not very good. Dust Holding Capacity is the key.
